"Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns, and for me, that turn was stumbling into landscaping in 2005. What started as a way to make ends meet while waiting to continue my architecture studies quickly became much more. The work was difficult and repetitive, not something I saw myself doing forever; but life has a way of shifting priorities. In 2010, with the birth of my first child, my focus turned entirely to work.
I was fortunate to land a job with a small landscaping firm in my hometown of Bellport, where I served as basic labor on a maintenance crew. It was here that my view of landscaping began to change. That year, I was introduced to the high-end properties east of the Canal—a world I never knew existed. I started in maintenance and eventually moved into landscape design and construction. Working on properties owned by heads of state and movie stars, I found myself in places I had never imagined.
My mentors were incredible, teaching me about the intricate beauty of gardens, from orchard and vegetable production to delicate cutting gardens. My passion for landscaping grew, and I transitioned into business ownership. Over the next decade, I worked in various capacities, from nursery management to account management, even serving as the lead orchardist at the largest estate in New York.
As my passion for landscaping deepened, it became a way of life. I’ve traveled across the country with my family, hiking and exploring places from the Redwoods groves of California, to the deserts of the Southwest, and the glaciers of northern Montana. With three children now, our travels continue, centered around nature and discovery.
In January 2021, I founded Greenwood, a business born out of nearly 20 years in the industry and a lifelong love of nature. Every day, I am grateful for the new challenges and opportunities that come with this work. I find immeasurable joy in sharing the wonders of nature with my children—a gift that was given to me so freely. That same philosophy guides our work at Greenwood, where we strive to bring that love of nature into every landscape we design."

"My journey began in San Miguel Ayala, Mexico, where I grew up surrounded by the land that would shape my life. My grandparents and parents worked tirelessly in the fields, planting Corn, Bean, and Jicama (a delicious root vegetable that resembles a radish). From a young age, I developed a deep connection with the land, learning the value of hard work and the beauty of cultivation.
After completing primary and secondary school, I went on to finish high school. My first experience in the United States came in 2007 when I arrived in Brooklyn and began working in a restaurant. Despite the new environment, my heart was always tied to the fields back home. This calling eventually led me to return to Mexico to finish my studies.
In 2012, I made the decision to come back to the United States, this time with my wife, who was three months pregnant with our son, Ian. We settled in Southampton and it was here that I found my true calling. Landscaping was the closest work to what I had done with my family in Mexico—working the land. It felt natural, familiar, and I immediately fell in love with it.
Since then, I have dedicated myself to landscaping, working throughout the area and honing my skills. The connection I have with the land, instilled in me by my family, is something I bring into every project. It’s more than just work to me; it’s a way of life. Every day, I strive to honor the legacy of my grandparents and parents by cultivating beauty and life in the landscapes I create.
At Greenwood, I’m fortunate to share this passion with our clients, bringing the same dedication and love for the land that has been with me since my childhood. Together, we craft landscapes that not only reflect the natural beauty of Long Island but also the deep-rooted traditions and values that I carry with me from San Miguel Ayala."
Our STORY
“Our journey into landscaping comes from different beginnings, yet it has led us to a shared passion and vision for Greenwood.
For Daryl, lanscaping began as a chance encounter in 2005, evolving from a job into a true calling. What started as a means to support a family turned into a lifelong pursuit of excellence in lanscape design and construction. With nearly two decades of experience, Daryl has worked on some of the most prestigious properties in Long Island, continually finding new challenges and opportunities to explore. His love for nature extends beyond work, as he and his family travel across the country, hiking and discovering the natural beauty that inspires his work every day.
Miguel’s story is rooted in the fields of San Miguel Ayala, Mexico, where he grew up working the land with his family. From a young age, he developed a deep connectin to the earth, a bond that followed him when he came to the United States in 2012. Settling in Southampton, Miguel found that landscaping was a natural extension of his upbringing, allowing him to continue the traditions and values passed down by his grandparents and parents. His dedication to the craft is evident in every project he undertakes, bringing life and beauty to the landscapes he helps create.
Together, we founded Greenwood Landcare Corp. with the goal of merging our experiences, cultures, and shared love for the land. Our company is built on the principles of hard work, respect for nature, and a commitment to creating landscapes that reflect the beauty of Long Island while honoring the traditions that guide us. We strive to bring our passion into every project, crafting spaces that are not only beautiful but also deeply connected to the natural world.
At Greenwood, we believe that landscaping is more than just a service - it’s a way of life. It’s about creating environments that inspire, nurture, and grow, just as the land has done for us throughout our lives. We are dedicated to sharing this philosophy with our cilents, helping them to discover the same joy and connection to nature that has shaped our journey.”
